Never a dull moment
You can hardly leave our apartment here without coming across some group or other preparing for Sevilla´s big week-Semana Santa, or Holy Week- in which everyone takes to the streets to watch processions of religious statues wending their way from one site to another, show off their best clothes and take a drink or two with friends and family. (This is shortly followed by the other big week, the Feria de Abril when everyone takes to the streets to watch processions of horses, show off their best clothes and take a drink or two with friends and family). In fact, we hardly need to go out. The costaleros, the guys who carry the statues on platforms and who are seriously muscular, use our street to practice so we can just lean over the balcony or our roof terrace to watch them go by. And last week on our staircase we bumped into two guys dressed as if for the Spanish Inquisition. It´s all happening here!
Of course we will not be in Sevilla for Semana Santa (We are off to San Roque-of which more another time). In fact, I would think our balcony and roof terrace may well be rented out for the week at an extortinate rate as we have already seen adverts in windows of balconies for rent for the week (yes, just the balcony. We assume you do go home in the evening.) However, we are really enjoying our time here even the 5 hours of Spanish classes a day! Who would have thought it!
Must go to class now. Hasta pronto!
